In 1931 Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his “discovery of the nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzyme.” In essence, he taught us some basic concepts about cells, how energy is produced, why oxygen is important to cells, and how cancers proliferate.
Scientists who study cancer have known for decades that cancer cells tend to consume more glucose, or blood sugar, than healthy cells. This tendency is known as the “Warburg Effect”. In very basic terms his work has shown us three things that happen when a cell becomes deprived and starved for oxygen.
(1) Fatigue – You feel tired. The ATP-manufacturing, energy-generating portion of your cell (the mitochondria) make your energy through a process known as oxidative phosphorylation. Oxygen is required for you to make energy. As your body becomes progressively more acid, you alter oxygen delivery to cells. The first sign is fatigue.
(2) Tissues Weaken – Groups of cells make tissues, groups of tissues make organs…lessons learned from high school biology. When tissues begin to weaken, you begin to shut down. I see a lot of “weak” connective tissue in my chiropractic practice. People with chronic myofascial pain syndromes from tissues that are just plain weak. You must consider your acid-alkaline balance.
(3) Cells Mutate – When cells mutate we call this cancer. The obvious statement here is this…you don’t want to get to this level.
So what does this mean for y0u? If you are chronically fatigued then don’t take the medical excuse that it’s just “normal” for you to feel that way. Fatigue is a sign of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction and should be addressed and dealt with properly. If you have chronic myofascial pain, are always seeing the chiropractor and “always going out of alignment”, then you need to consider other issues that are going on. People are stressed, toxic and malnourished. That means you need to cleanse, nourish and balance your body. Failure to do so will lead to more oxygen deprivation in your cells, increased tissue weakening and then the mutation of these cells into cancerous cells.
