Magnificent Seven: Eat Right – Multiple Vitamin/Mineral

How would you like to invest in something that provides you with a 17:1 return on your investment.  That means if you invest $1 you would get back $17!  Well guess what…micronutrient supplementation provides such a return according to a Copenhagen Consensus Best Practice Paper.  For every dollar spent, there is a $17 return in the form of better health, fewer deaths, increased future earnings, etc.  The 24th Volume of Advances In Therapy states that “only supplementation was able to significantly boost nutrient levels, and confer beneficial effects on general welfare, physical performance, and resistance to infections.  Therefore, it appears that nutritional supplements are advisable for everyone”

What is the key concept?  Food is too weak to replete depleted cells and bodies.  There is no such thing as a well-rounded diet any longer.  Even the healthiest of diets need to be supplemented with a daily multiple vitamin/mineral support.

A discussion about multiple vitamins would not be complete without at least mentioning a 2009 Nobel Prize winning discovery.  That is the subject of telomeres.  Telomeres are proven markers of DNA and cellular aging.  Unhealthy lifestyle choices can accelerate DNA and cellular aging.  Telomeres are sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome that serve the primary role of preventing chromosomal “fraying” when a cell replicates.  Think of telomeres as the little plastic caps on the end of your shoelace that prevents your laces from fraying.  As a cell ages the telomeres get shorter.  Eventually the telomeres get so short, the cell can’t replicate any longer, and then it dies.  Aging is a complex process that is linked to accumulation of DNA damage.

Telomere length is dynamic.  That can be good or bad…depending on what you are doing to protect your telomeres.  The good news is that daily multiple vitamin/mineral supplementation has been shown to lengthen telomeres.  Longer telomeres correlate to healthy aging.

“I don’t think people need vitamins and they are a waste of money…

…that is only if they eat wild, fresh, whole, organic, local, nongenetically modified food grown in virgin mineral- and nutrient-rich soils and not transported across vast distances and stored for months before being eaten.  And if they work and live outside, breathe only fresh unpolluted air, drink only pure, clean water, sleep nine hours a night, move their bodies every day, and are free from chronic stressors and exposure to environmental toxins.”

That is a great excerpt from Dr. Mark Hyman’s book, Ultra Mind Solution.  What a great way to express that everyone needs a multiple vitamin/mineral each day.  Combining the wealth of information on telomeres, stress physiology, epigenetics, oncogenesis (how cancer starts) and the development of chronic disease you would be foolish and unwise to not take a multiple vitamin/mineral each day.

So how about that “one-a-day”?  Just take that one capsule that comes in the jumbo container from Walmart.  Or how about those flavored Flinstone vitamins…they must be good, right?  Wrong.  Look at the ingredients, the artificial flavors and the colorings added to these products.  Look at the inferior raw materials that are used.  Consumer Labs has shown over-the-counter vitamins sold at local discount centers to be contaminated with lead and mercury!  That is definitely not something I want to put in my body!  It isn’t possible to fit all the necessary nutrient support in one pill.  If someone said they did, they are lying to you.

Look for a company with GMP-certification.   Look for a pharmaceutical grade supplement.  Look for adequate levels and forms of the nutrients in the tablets.  When speaking of forms I mean the chelate that is used.  For example, calcium citrate is much different than calcium malate.  Magnesium citrate is much different than magnesium glycinate.  Different forms serve different roles.

The question that always comes up is should I take capsules versus tablets versus liquid versus powder.  The form doesn’t matter as long as bioavailability studies have been completed.  In my practice we use almost exclusively tablets that are from a triple-GMP certified, NNFA certified manufacturer and has had independent absorption assays on their products.  I know they are being absorbed.  You may take some liquid “junk” and still not getting any improved absorption just because it is liquid, so be cautious when people make those claims.

So make sure you and your family are taking adequate protection and insurance on your health.  Increase the length of your telomeres, encourage healthy aging, decrease disease risk and promote optimal wellness.
